Connie conferred with me by phone for over two hours regarding my memoir. She gave me high praise for my story and writing, but noted that while reading and reviewing my book, there were distracting sentence structures and awkward word choices that needed cleaning up. I knew the first half of my book was nearly flawless, yet I instinctively felt uneasy about the second half of the book. I didn’t know what to do about it so I left it as it was. I simply couldn’t put my finger on the cause of the problem. As a result, my book didn’t read as smoothly as it should have. Then, as if she were the incarnation of The Hovering Writing Muse, Connie gave me page, paragraph, and line number over the phone for each addition, deletion, and more appropriate punctuation. She readily fixed over 50 errors. She gave the book better clarity and made it into a sweeping narrative. What was so difficult for me to see seemed like second nature for her. She explained reasons for each grammatical correction so that I knew, for example, why “whom” replaced “who.” For passages lacking connection, she made adjustments. With each modification I said, “Well, of course. Why didn’t I see that? It’s so obvious to me now.” Like finally swatting an annoying little insect that caused me to lose sleep every night, I feel like my memoir has been perfected and elevated to its highest presentation. Now I can return to slumber in peace. What a great feeling. Thank you so very much, Connie. You are The Premier Proofreader!
